Microlots of Specialty Coffees

A gem for coffee lovers.

At Wayku Foods, we're passionate about offering unique products that highlight quality and exclusivity, and micro-lot specialty coffee is one of those treasures that deserves special attention. But what exactly is a micro-lot, and why is it so highly valued in the coffee world? Below, we explain everything you need to know about this type of specialty coffee.

What is a micro-lot of specialty coffee?

A microlot is a limited batch of coffee that comes from a very specific, usually small, plot on a specific farm or region. Unlike conventional coffee or even some more widely produced specialty coffees, microlots represent lots carefully selected for their exceptional quality, unique organoleptic characteristics, and ideal growing and processing conditions.

Características técnicas que definen los microlotes

  • Origin and traceability: Each microlot has a very clear and traceable origin, from the farm, altitude, and grain variety to the processing method used. This traceability guarantees quality and authenticity.
  • Sensory Quality: To be considered a specialty microlot, coffee must achieve a minimum score in sensory evaluations (usually 86 points or higher in cupping tests conducted by expert Q graders). Flavor profiles are often complex and distinctive, with floral, fruity, citrus, or nutty and chocolate notes.
  • Processing methods: Among the most common methods are washing, natural, and controlled fermentation. Each contributes its own aromas and characteristics, highlighting the personality of the bean and its terroir.
  • Limited production: The production volume of a micro-batch is small, allowing for rigorous control at all stages and avoiding mixes that could dilute quality.

Importance and benefits of microlots for producers and consumers

For producers, microlots represent the opportunity to access premium markets and obtain higher prices, which incentivizes continuous improvement in agricultural practices and sustainability. For consumers and roasters, it means enjoying exclusive coffees with unique profiles and the peace of mind of consuming an authentic and carefully crafted product.

Microlotes y la sostenibilidad social y ambiental

Microlots are often associated with sustainable practices, such as organic farming or fair trade, which benefit both the environment and the producing communities.

Micro-lot specialty coffee isn't just a beverage; it's a sensorial and cultural experience that connects consumers with the history and efforts of passionate small producers. At Wayku Foods, we're committed to bringing these coffee gems to your cup, because we know every sip counts.
