    What is a micro-lot of specialty coffee?

    A microlot is a limited batch of coffee that comes from a very specific, usually small, plot on a specific farm or region. Unlike conventional coffee or even some more widely produced specialty coffees, microlots represent lots carefully selected for their exceptional quality, unique organoleptic characteristics, and ideal growing and processing conditions.

    • Origin and traceability: Each microlot has a very clear and traceable origin, from the farm, altitude, and grain variety to the processing method used. This traceability guarantees quality and authenticity.
    • Sensory Quality: To be considered a specialty microlot, coffee must achieve a minimum score in sensory evaluations (usually 86 points or higher in cupping tests conducted by expert Q graders). Flavor profiles are often complex and distinctive, with floral, fruity, citrus, or nutty and chocolate notes.
    • Processing methods: Among the most common methods are washing, natural, and controlled fermentation. Each contributes its own aromas and characteristics, highlighting the personality of the bean and its terroir.
    • Limited production: The production volume of a micro-batch is small, allowing for rigorous control at all stages and avoiding mixes that could dilute quality.
